- Mechanical hazards
- Climatic or environmental hazards
- Biological hazards
- Chemical hazards

Be economical, thus contributing to overall profitability.
Be aesthetically acceptable.
Packaging is classified as-

Primary packaging
Secondary packaging

Primary Packaging is the packaging components directly containing the
product (e.g. Bottle, cap etc. ). It protects against chemical,
climatic, biological or mechanical hazards which may cause product
spoilage.

Secondary Packaging provides additional protection for safe ware
housing and delivery to the point where bulk is broken into individual
units.

Packaging materials can be classified on the basis of material of
construction

- Glass and glass containers
- Metal and metal containers
- Plastics and plastic containers
- Paper and board
- Films, foils and laminates
- Rubber based components

Glass and Glass containers offers the advantages of transparency,
easy cleaning, is inert, high speed handling. Good rigidity, stack
ability and economical which outweigh the disadvantage of fragility
and weight.

Pharmaceutically acceptable glass is classified into four categories:-

- Natural Borosilicate glass, offers high Hydrolytic
resistance due to chemical composition.
- Surface treated soda lime glass, offers high hydrolytic
resistance due to surface treatment
- Soda lime glass has moderate hydrolytic resistance
- General purpose soda lime glass.

Things Used in packaging the pharmaceutical materials

- Metals ( Tin plated or Alumunium )
- Plastics
