Reservation Is a Political Gimmick

is-reservation-good-or-bad“Reservation is not only a remedy, But an Addiction.”

In today’s world, where even the general public has become mere “puppets” in the hands of petty politicians, so just forget about economical and socially deprived section. They have been cheated at every point of life by selfish people whom they have full faith in.

India is one of the countries that practices affirmative action. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the father of Indian Constitution, made provisions for minorities in government run institutions in 1950’s. Consequently, IIT’s have been offering reservations for scheduled castes of society since 1973. Initially it implemented but later it modified scheme in 1983 was introduced whose basic purpose was that there should be no compromise on the quality of students. But the seats which are not transferable to General Category are still cutting the slot of general category.

The goal of reservations in India has been to bring about an improvement in the welfare who economically and socially depressed. But in arriving at this about who should be eligible for reservations? The criterion has been person’s caste rather than his income or wealth. Consequently, groups belonging to what Article 115 of the constitution calls “socially and educationally backward classes” have benefited even though many of these classes cannot be regarded as backward. Actual benefit is going to upper class whereas downtrodden are still at the same status.  Today reservation is used to please some people and get quick votes.

In 2006, the UPA government promised to implement 27% reservations for OBC’s in institutes of higher educations ( 20 central universities) the IIT’s, IIM’s and AIIMS after 2006 assembly elections. This is all just a political gimmick. If this had been implemented it would have reduced the seats for the general section of the population to less than 50.5%.

There have been sharp reactions from the students under banner “Youth For Equality” where about 150 students did hunger strike in AIIMS which as on 23rd May entered into its 9th day.

The main disagreement against the concept of reservation is that it goes against the idea of merits. It is diminishing the IIT’s and other pioneer institutions. If students gain admission in these institutions through reservation, they are unable to adjust in the academics.

“If reservations had been antidote for backwardness then after 55 years of its use, it should have become unnecessary”. But No! It has become an addiction rather than remedy”

I believe that time has come to overview a existing system of caste based reservations policy in India. Since long time, politicians have been taking undue advantage of the sensitive feelings of the countrymen. Right educational policy is the ‘gateway’ to solutions of poverty, caste barrier, unemployment and many more. Youth is not secure in hands of such a government which make vote bank oriented laws.

Its my please that take some action for reservation bell, to wake up before it’s too late when these term aid, these selfish politicians weaken our roots to the extent we fall. Otherwise this politics over reservations will destroy our youth and hence country.

“Reserve place through intellect, not through caste then this land is ought to flourish.”
