” GENERAL PACKET RADIO SERVICE – GPRS ”
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a generation 2.5 data-handling & packet switching,
wireless technology. It provides increased efficiency compared to other technologies by
ensuring that network resources are used only when information is being transmitted.
GPRS (along with EDGE) are considered stepping stones in GSM and TDMA networks moves
towards throughout rates specified under international, Mird Generation(3G), IMT-2000
wireless standards.
GPRS PERFORMANCE
GPRS can support a wide range of bandwidths and is particularly efficient in cases of
limited bandwidth. It is well suited both for large volumes of data and small data burst,
making it particularly useful for applications such as e-mail and web browsing. Its high
throughput can also support multimedia content. Because GPRS uses the radio link only
during the time data it is sending or receiving data, it is cost effective for users to
remain logged on to the internet continuously.
Also, voice and data can transmitted simultaneously with GPRS
GPRS supports both IP & *.25 Internet communications protocols. The theoretical
maximum data rate for GPRS is 160 Kbps. This rate is possible when light out of the
eight available time slots for IP-based packet data speeds are used. However, many
GPRS devices may not use all eight slots.
APPLICATIONS
Industry leaders are focusing efforts on links between mobile phones, PDA’s, portable
computers and PC’s, but potential applications are for more diverse. Other possible
uses include connecting portable computers or handled devices to a wide range of
peripherals such as printers, fax machines, keyboards or joysticks. By creating a
bridge to other data networks. Bluetooth also will allow people to use mobile devices
in innovative ways, such as creating work group away from infrastructures or allowing
people to surf the internet the comfort of their sofa.
Product & Services Availability
GPRS telephones & terminals are already available, offering at least limited GPRS
services. GSM trial deployments are already underway in Europe & Asia. The first roll
out of complete service expected.
